Period

c. 1780 - c. 1790

Brisé fan of ivory, carved in relief with flowers and scrolls, and fitted with three oval medallions, the central one bearing 'Sacred to Love'. 30 contiguous sticks carved and worked on one side in relief with flowers and scrolls. Unlike other examples from this period, this fan does not have a monogram in the central medallion but a motto. From this (the language) one may conclude that the fan was intended for the English market and was most likely shipped to Europe by the English trading company. A flower and leaf motif is applied over the entire fan, alternated only along the edge of the openings for the ribbon with diaper work. This decoration is enlivened by butterflies, small birds, peacocks, and hummingbird-like birds. The Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, holds this object as BK-NM-7007; its record gives material recorded as ivory, copper (metal), mother of pearl, cotton (textile); technique cutting, weaving. Description translated from the museum's Dutch catalogue text; details are those of this museum object, and how far it represents a wider type has not been independently verified.
