Period

1921

This set consists of two emergency money banknotes (Notgeld) issued by the city of Itzehoe, Holstein, in 1921. The pieces were designed by the artist Wenzel Hablik.

The set includes a 50 Pfennig denomination measuring 5.9 x 11.2 cm and a 1 Mark denomination measuring 5.5 x 10.5 cm. Both banknotes are printed on recto and verso. The 50 Pfennig note features a geometric composition in black, brown, and blue, while the 1 Mark note utilizes a palette of black, brown, and grey. Each banknote is individually numbered '03157'. The design incorporates elaborate typography and lists various commodity prices from 1913 compared to 1921, providing historical context for the inflation of the period.

The banknotes are official municipal issues intended for local circulation and serve as a tangible example of German emergency currency produced during the hyperinflation years of the Weimar Republic.
