Period

1922

This collection features a set of three 100-pfennig Notgeld notes issued by the city of Sternberg, Germany, in 1922 during a period of hyperinflation. Notgeld, or emergency money, was produced as a localized substitute for currency when insufficient state-issued money was available from the central bank.

These specific notes form a series characterized by anti-Semitic propaganda motifs based on historical allegations from 1492 regarding the purported desecration of the host. The three individual notes depict a narrative sequence: the first shows the acquisition of wafers, the second portrays the stabbing of the wafers, and the third illustrates the punishment of the individuals involved. The reverse side of each note is decorated with a common illustration of the town of Sternberg as it appeared in 1492, the year of the alleged historical event.

The notes are presented in a frame alongside a descriptive label and a facsimile illustrating the uniform reverse design. Each note measures 3 by 4 inches.
