Historical context

Wooden fan, of overlapping sticks held together by ribbon, with designs on the guards, probably by Anna Alma Tadema (1867-1943), the sticks autographed by various actors and personalities, late 19th-early 20th century. The earliest dated signature on this fan is that of Anna Alma Tadema, dated 5 January 1888, but the majority of signatures date from the late 1890s and include those of artist John Tenniel, and actors Henry Irving, Fred Terry and John Hare. Some are dedicated to the fan's owner, the actress Mabel Terry-Lewis (1872-1957), a member of the Terry acting dynasty. The fan passed to Terry-Lewis's nephew John Gielgud, whose signature is included on one of the central sticks.
