This object is a folding brisé fan made of tortoiseshell, dating to between 1800 and 1900. Originating from Hungary, the fan features individual tortoiseshell blades linked together, with scalloped tips along the upper perimeter. When closed, including the loop at the pivot, it measures 21.9 cm in length; when fully opened, it extends to a width of 30.5 cm.

The guards are decorated with applied metalwork featuring a symmetrical design of leafy scrollwork and rosettes. This applied ornamentation is embellished using the technique of enamelling and is accented with coloured glass pastes set throughout the metal mounts, including along the guard stick and around the pivot area.
