Period

1948

This folding fan features sixteen bamboo sticks and is crafted with a leaf made of ink and color on mica paper. One side presents a landscape painting by Zhang Daqian, inscribed with a poetic dedication to Ye Gongchuo (Xia'an) and dated to the wuzi year (1948).

This side is signed 'Daqian Jushi Zhang Yuan' and bears three artist's seals. The reverse side features a composition in running script calligraphy, also dated wuzi and signed by the artist with two additional seals. The fan's frame is constructed of bamboo, intricately carved by the renowned artist Jin Xiya, who included his own inscription and a carved seal on the sticks. Measuring approximately 9 by 25 1/4 inches (23 by 64 cm), the work serves as a sophisticated marriage of fine painting, literary calligraphy, and master-level bamboo carving.

The overall presentation reflects the high artistic standard of 20th-century Chinese scholar-artist traditions, blending visual aesthetics with thematic literary content in a functional, portable format typical of literati collectibles from this era.
