Period

1877

The pipe retains its original detachable mouthpiece, removable tobacco bowl, hinged tobacco compartment, integral water reservoir, suspension cord, and openwork cash-coin charm.

Remarkably substantial for its size, the silver body weighs 543 grams, reflecting the heavy gauge of the metal and the exceptional quality of its construction. The rectangular body is richly engraved with bamboo, flowering prunus, and other auspicious botanical motifs, all executed against a meticulously punch-textured ground and framed within raised lozenge-shaped reserves. The decoration is crisply rendered, displaying confident engraving, balanced composition, and careful attention to detail throughout.

The combination of engraved ornament and textured surfaces creates a lively interplay of light and shadow that enhances the sculptural quality of the object. Ingeniously designed, the pipe integrates its water reservoir and tobacco compartment into a compact yet highly functional form, exemplifying the practical sophistication of traditional Chinese water tobacco pipes. Beyond its utilitarian purpose, the refined decoration and robust construction elevate the piece into a work of decorative metalwork, reflecting the aesthetic ideals and technical accomplishments of late Qing silversmiths.

The inscription dating the pipe to the third year of the Guangxu reign (1877) provides valuable historical context, while the workshop inscription Yongsheng Jianzao identifies its manufacture under the supervision of the Yongsheng workshop, a designation indicative of organized production and quality control. Together, these inscriptions enhance both the historical significance and documentary value of the piece.
