Period
Guangxu Third Year (1877)
This substantial and finely crafted Chinese water tobacco pipe, dating to 1877 (the third year of the Guangxu reign), exemplifies the sophisticated metalwork of the late Qing dynasty.
The object features a robust silver body weighing 543 grams, showcasing exceptional construction quality. It is designed with an upright, rectangular form that integrates an integral water reservoir with a hinged tobacco compartment. The pipe is highly complete, retaining its original detachable mouthpiece, a removable tobacco bowl, and an accompanying openwork cash-coin charm. The exterior surfaces are decorated with intricate engravings of bamboo, flowering prunus, and various auspicious botanical motifs, set against a meticulously punch-textured ground and framed by raised lozenge-shaped reserves.
The inscription Yongsheng Jianzao identifies the piece as being produced under the supervision of the Yongsheng workshop. Standing 10.75 inches high and 4.75 inches wide, the pipe functions as both a refined personal smoking implement and a decorative sculptural object, displaying a balance of practical engineering and ornate artistic tradition characteristic of high-quality nineteenth-century Chinese silver accessories.
