Historical context

Gargara was an ancient Greek city located on the southern coast of the Troad region of Anatolia, originally situated below Mount Gargaron. During the 4th century BCE, the settlement relocated roughly 5.8 km south to a coastal plain, leaving the earlier location to be known as Old Gargara. This Hellenistic bronze coin was issued by the city of Gargara between c. 133 and 50 BC.
