Historical context

Gargara was an ancient Greek city situated on the southern coast of the Troad region of Anatolia, originally founded beneath Mount Gargaron on Mount Ida, known today as Koca Kaya. During the 4th century BCE, the settlement shifted roughly 5.8 km south to a coastal plain near modern Arıklı and Nusratlı in the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale Province. Operating as a civic authority during the Hellenistic Period, the city issued this coin type between c. 133 and 50 BC.
