Historical context

Gargara was an ancient Greek city located on the southern coast of the Troad region of Anatolia, in what is now the Ayvacık district of Çanakkale Province in Turkey. Originally situated beneath Mount Gargaron, the community relocated in the 4th century BCE to a coastal site near the modern settlements of Arıklı and Nusratlı. Operating as a civic issuing authority within the Roman Imperial Period, the city produced bronze coinage such as this type around the 1st to 2nd century AD.
