Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211 after seizing power during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax. This bronze coin was issued under his authority between AD 193 and 211 by the city of Gargara. The issuing city was an ancient Greek settlement situated on the southern coast of the Troad, an Anatolian region bounded by the Dardanelles and the Aegean Sea.
