Historical context
Rhoemetalces I was a loyal ally of Augustus, the first Roman emperor who ruled from 27 BC until AD 14. Following the death of his nephew Rhescuporis II during an anti-Roman revolt in 13 BC, Rhoemetalces I fled Thrace but was installed by Augustus as king of whole Thrace in 12 BC after the rebellion ended. Rhoemetalces I ruled the Sapaean kingdom of Thrace until his death in AD 12, at which point Augustus divided the realm between the king's son Cotys III and brother Rhescuporis II.
