Historical context

Rhoemetalces I became king of the Sapaean kingdom of Thrace in 12 BC after his nephew Rhescuporis II died without an heir. Rhoemetalces I was a loyal ally of Augustus, who ruled as the first Roman emperor from 27 BC until AD 14. Numismatic evidence provides the only record of Queen Pythodoris I, the wife of Rhoemetalces I. Rhoemetalces I ruled Thrace until his death in AD 12, after which Augustus divided the realm.
