Historical context

Rhoemetalces I was king of the Sapaean kingdom of Thrace from 15 BC to AD 12. A loyal ally of Augustus, the first Roman emperor who ruled from 27 BC until AD 14, Rhoemetalces had fled Thrace during a revolt led by Vologases in 13 BC. Following the death of his nephew Rhescuporis II without an heir, Augustus restored the territory to Rhoemetalces's family, establishing him as king of all Thrace in 12 BC.
