Historical context
Marcianopolis, also known as Markianopolis or Parthenopolis, was an ancient Greek and Roman city located in Moesia Inferior. Lucius Septimius Severus reigned as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, securing supreme authority after the death of Pertinax in 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors and subsequent campaigns against rival claimants. This civic bronze was produced under his imperial rule between 193 and 211 by the city authorities at Markianopolis.
