Historical context
Nicopolis ad Istrum was a Roman and Early Byzantine town that reached its zenith during the reigns of Hadrian, the Antonines, and the Severan dynasty. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, known as Elagabalus, ruled as Roman emperor from 218 to 222 after being raised to the Principate at 14 years of age following an army revolt against Macrinus. A close relative of the Severan dynasty from Emesa, Syria, his short reign ended amidst rising opposition when he was 18 years old.
