Historical context

Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211, establishing the Severan dynasty after emerging victorious from the civil conflicts following the death of Pertinax. This provincial bronze coin was produced at Nicopolis ad Istrum, a Roman and Early Byzantine town located south of the Danube River in the province of Moesia Inferior. The town achieved its height of prominence during the reigns of Hadrian, the Antonines, and Severus's own dynasty.
