Historical context
This bronze coin was minted by the city of Istros in Moesia inferior, a former Greek colony on the Black Sea coast that had come under Roman rule from the 1st century AD. It features Gordian III, who reigned as Roman emperor from 238 to 244 after ascending the throne at 13 years of age, alongside his wife Furia Sabinia Tranquillina, Empress of Rome and daughter of the Praetorian Prefect Timesitheus.
