Historical context
Philip the Arab, born Marcus Julius Philippus, served as Roman emperor from 244 to 249 following the death of Gordian III. Although his five-year reign coincided with the crisis of the third century, he achieved early stability by making peace with the Sasanian Empire and repelling an invasion across the Danube in 246. This bronze coin was issued under his authority at Kallatis, an ancient city on the Black Sea coast situated in the province of Moesia Inferior.
