Philip I, commonly known as Philip the Arab, reigned as Roman emperor from 244 to 249 following the death of Gordian III. His wife, Marcia Otacilia Severa, served as Roman empress alongside him and was the mother of co-emperor Philip II. This civic bronze issue was struck under Philip at Callatis, an ancient city and port on the Black Sea coast in Moesia inferior.
