Historical context

Skepsis was an ancient settlement in the Troad, Asia Minor, located at the present site of Kurşunlutepe near Bayramiç in Turkey. Augustus, the first Roman emperor from 27 BC until AD 14, adopted his grandsons Gaius Caesar and Lucius Caesar as his sons and joint-heirs. Struck at Skepsis during the reign of Augustus, this civic coin features the heads of both young heirs.
