Historical context

This civic bronze coin was struck at Ilion in Troas between AD 178 and 182, a period spanning the final years of the reign of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. Marcus Aurelius governed the Roman Empire from 161 until his death in 180 as a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. The coin depicts Bruttia Crispina, who became Roman empress in 178 upon her marriage to Marcus Aurelius's son and successor, the emperor Commodus.
