Historical context

This bronze coin was struck at Alexandria Troas, an ancient Greek city located in the Troad near the Aegean Sea, between AD 175 and 177. Marcus Aurelius ruled as Roman emperor from 161 to 180, accompanied from 177 by his son Commodus as nominal co-emperor. In 176, Commodus travelled with his father on a tour of the Eastern provinces before becoming the youngest emperor and consul the following year, a transitional period reflected in provincial civic issues bearing his portrait.
