Historical context

Assos was an ancient Greek city on the Aegean coast of the Troad, situated on the Adramyttian Gulf where it possessed the only good harbour along that 80-kilometre stretch of coast. Commodus ruled as Roman emperor from 177 to 192, reigning alone from 180 following the death of his father, Marcus Aurelius. Under his imperial administration, civic mints in the province struck local bronze coinage.
