Historical context

Assos was an ancient Greek city situated on the Aegean coast of the Troad, on the Adramyttian Gulf, where it held the only good harbour along 80 kilometres of coastline. During the Roman Imperial Period, the city issued local bronzes under Severus Alexander, the last emperor of the Severan dynasty. His reign, lasting from 222 until his assassination in March 235, was marked by internal stability and prosperity before giving way to civil strife.
