Historical context
Skepsis, also called Scepsis, was an ancient settlement situated in the Troad, Asia Minor. Under the Roman Imperial Period, the city produced civic bronze coinage during the reign of Severus Alexander, who served as Roman emperor from 222 until his murder in March 235. Severus Alexander was the final ruler of the Severan dynasty, whose death initiated nearly fifty years of civil war and instability.
