Historical context

Skepsis was an ancient settlement in the Troad, situated in Asia Minor near modern Bayramiç. Severus Alexander ruled as Roman emperor from AD 222 to 235 as the final ruler of the Severan dynasty, succeeding Elagabalus at the age of 13. During his thirteen-year reign, civic bronze issues were produced at Skepsis bearing the emperor's portrait and title alongside local civic types.
