Historical context

This bronze coin was struck at Skepsis, an ancient settlement situated in the Troad in Asia Minor. It was issued under Severus Alexander, Roman emperor from AD 222 until 235. The last ruler of the Severan dynasty, he succeeded his slain cousin Elagabalus at the age of 13 and presided over a prosperous thirteen-year reign before his assassination in 235 ushered in prolonged civil war.
