Historical context
This bronze 5-unit piece was struck between c. AD 217 and 218 at Markianopolis, an ancient Greek and Roman capital city in Moesia Inferior located at the site of modern-day Devnya, Bulgaria. Marcus Opellius Macrinus reigned as Roman emperor from April 217 until June 218. His young son Diadumenian was made caesar in May 217 and subsequently served as co-emperor alongside his father in 218 before both were overthrown and executed following the Battle of Antioch.
