Historical context
Caracalla, born Lucius Septimius Bassianus, reigned as Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, first as co-ruler alongside his father Septimius Severus and later as sole emperor. Dionysopolis was a city situated in Moesia inferior, part of the Roman province of Moesia south of the Danube River. This bronze five-unit denomination was struck under Caracalla during the early years of his imperial rule, between AD 198 and 202.
