Obol in silver struck at Gergis in Troas, dated c. 400–340 BC. Corpus Nummorum, the online type corpus of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, records it as CN type 20815 (period: Classical Period; issuing authority type: city).

Obverse: Laureate head of the sibyl Herophile three quarter facing right. Reverse: Griffin seated right. Legend: ΓΕΡ. Measured specimens give a mean weight of 0.6 g (mean of 9 recorded specimens) and a diameter of 8–9 mm (from 7 recorded specimens). The corpus assigns the type to the Chian weight standard.

Historical context

Gergis was an ancient town in the Troad, situated north of the Scamander River. Described in the time of Xenophon as a strong place possessing an acropolis and robust walls, it was one of the chief settlements of the Dardanian princess Mania. The old town was traditionally believed by some to be the birthplace of the Sibyl, leading the city to impress the image of the prophetess upon its coinage.
