Historical context

Larissa, also known as Larisa, was an ancient Greek city located in the south-west of the Troad region of Anatolia. Situated on a coastal rise now known as Limantepe, near Kösedere and Babadere in modern Çanakkale province, Turkey, the city held surrounding territory referred to as the Larissaia. In the 4th century BC, Larissa functioned as an autonomous civic authority issuing its own bronze coinage during the Classical and Hellenistic periods.
