Historical context
Marcianopolis was an ancient capital city in the Roman province of Moesia Inferior, situated south of the Danube River in modern-day Devnya, Bulgaria. Lucius Septimius Severus ruled as Roman emperor from 193 to 211 after rising to power during the Year of the Five Emperors. Under his reign, provincial civic mints across the empire, including Marcianopolis, issued local bronze coinage bearing his imperial bust alongside civic and religious iconography.
