Historical context

This coin was issued under Gordian III (Marcus Antonius Gordianus), who served as Roman emperor from 238 to 244 after becoming the second-youngest sole emperor of the empire at age 13. It was struck at Marcianopolis (also known as Parthenopolis), an ancient Greek and later Roman capital city located in Moesia Inferior. Moesia itself was an imperial Roman province created after the Danubian-Hæmus conquest south of the Danube River.
