Historical context
Marcianopolis, also recorded as Markianopolis, was an ancient Greek and Roman city located in the province of Moesia Inferior. Gordian III served as Roman emperor between 238 and 244, having acceded to the imperial throne at the age of 13 following the reigns of his maternal grandfather Gordian I and uncle Gordian II. This bronze coin was issued by the civic authorities of Marcianopolis during his reign.
