Historical context

Tomis, located in Moesia inferior, struck civic coinage during the reign of the Roman emperor Elagabalus, who ruled between 218 and 222. Originally named Varius Avitus Bassianus and a relative of the Severan dynasty, he served as head priest of the sun god Elagabal in Emesa before being raised to the imperial title at the age of 14 following a military revolt against Macrinus.
