Historical context
Nicopolis ad Istrum was a Roman and Early Byzantine town in northern Bulgaria that reached its peak during the reigns of Hadrian, the Antonines, and the Severan dynasty. This civic bronze issue was struck under Emperor Macrinus, who ruled from April 217 to June 218 after the murder of Caracalla. The coin depicts Macrinus's young son Diadumenian, who was created caesar in May 217 and briefly elevated to co-ruler before both were defeated and executed in June 218.
