Historical context

Sigeion was an ancient Greek city located in the north-west of the Troad, an Anatolian region bounded by the Dardanelles and the Aegean Sea. Positioned on a ridge by the mouth of the Scamander River, the city commanded the Sigean Promontory, which served ancient geographers as an important landmark marking the entrance to the Hellespont. The settlement issued civic coinage during the Classical Period.
