Historical context
Lucius Septimius Severus was Roman emperor from 193 until his death on 4 February 211. Born in Leptis Magna, he emerged victorious from the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax, defeating rival claimants Pescennius Niger in 194 and Clodius Albinus in 197. Severus campaigned extensively, including against the Parthian Empire and across Africa and Britain. During his reign, the provincial city of Kallatis (ancient Callatis), located in Moesia inferior on the Black Sea coast, struck civic bronze coinage bearing his imperial portrait and title.
