Historical context

Istros was founded by Milesian settlers in the 7th century BC as a Greek colony on the western coast of the Black Sea, later coming under Roman rule from the 1st century AD in the province of Moesia. Julia Domna, born in Emesa in Roman Syria, was empress as the wife of Septimius Severus and the mother of emperors Caracalla and Geta. Following the death of Severus in 211 AD, she remained active at court and accompanied Caracalla on campaigns until her death in 217 AD.
