Historical context
Istros, also known as Histria, was founded by Milesian settlers in the 7th century BC as a Greek polis on the western coast of the Black Sea near the mouth of the Danube. From the 1st century AD, the city came under Roman rule within the province of Moesia. Lucius Septimius Severus served as Roman emperor from 193 to 211 after emerging victorious from the Year of the Five Emperors in 193. This bronze civic issue was struck at Istros under Severus's authority during his imperial reign.
