Historical context
Tenedos is an Aegean island situated in the northeastern part of the sea near the entrance of the Dardanelles. Throughout classical antiquity, it occupied a position of strategic importance despite its modest dimensions. Over the centuries, the island was governed by a succession of regional powers, including the Persian Empire and the Delian League. During the Classical Period, it functioned as an independent civic issuing authority, producing local silver coinages such as obols.
