Historical context

Zeleia was an ancient town in the Troad, situated at the foot of Mount Ida along the river Aesepus. Known from the Iliad as a holy town that assisted Troy, it later served as the headquarters of the Persian army before the Battle of the Granicus in May 334 BCE, when Persian satraps met in council at Zeleia to plan resistance against Alexander the Great. This bronze piece was struck by the city during the Classical or Hellenistic period, dated to circa 350–300 BC.
