Historical context
Nicopolis ad Istrum was a Roman and Early Byzantine town that reached its zenith during the reigns of Hadrian, the Antonines, and the Severan dynasty. This civic bronze issue was struck there between AD 218 and 222 under Emperor Elagabalus, a member of the Severan family originally from Emesa who became emperor at the age of 14 in 218. His reign ended when he was killed at 18 years of age in March 222.
