Historical context

Abydos was an ancient city in Mysia on the Asian coast of the Hellespont, located in modern Turkey. Caracalla, originally named Lucius Septimius Bassianus and born to Septimius Severus and Julia Domna, ruled as Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD, initially as co-emperor alongside his father before ruling alone after 211 AD. During this era, bronze civic coinage was issued in his name at Abydos in the historical region of the Troad.
