Historical context

Nicopolis ad Istrum was a Roman and Early Byzantine town situated in northern Bulgaria. The city flourished notably during the reigns of Hadrian, the Antonines, and the Severan dynasty. This bronze issue was struck for the city between AD 193 and 197 under Lucius Septimius Severus, who reigned as Roman emperor from 193 to 211 after emerging victorious from the civil conflicts that followed the death of Pertinax during the Year of the Five Emperors.
