Recognized as a classical polis by inscriptional evidence, the city was situated in a district that occasionally came under Persian control and was a member of the Athenian Empire's Delian League during the 5th century BC, paying tribute from 451/50 through 429/9 BC. This bronze coin represents an issue of Dardanos during the Roman Imperial Period, dated between c. 27 BC and AD 100.
