Historical context

Dardanus was an ancient city and classical polis located in the Troad, a historical region in northwestern Anatolia. The city minted coinage in various metals from the 6th to the 4th centuries BC, having previously been part of the Delian League during the 5th century BC. This bronze coin was issued by the city under the Roman emperor Lucius Septimius Severus, who reigned from 193 to 211 after seizing power during the Year of the Five Emperors following the death of Pertinax.
