Period

late 1700's

This large tobacco pipe features a massive bowl crafted from a single block of meerschaum, intricately carved to depict the Battle of Vienna. The detailed relief carving illustrates scenes related to the 1683 military engagement between the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth against the Ottoman Empire.

The underside of the bowl is adorned with the Coat of Arms of Hungary. The meerschaum bowl is fitted with a silver lid or cap and is attached to a substantial wooden stem measuring 23 1/2 inches in length. The total bowl dimensions are 5 1/4 by 5 1/2 inches. This late 18th-century piece demonstrates the fine craftsmanship associated with meerschaum carving traditions of the era, combining historical commemorative themes with functional design elements typical of the Hungarian Empire region.
